Sam Rey, meet the artist..

Sam Rey was born in Mexico and lived for many years in the US, the Netherlands and Italy before arriving in Australia.

His career to date has included a brief stint at The Factory with Andy Warhol, designing and selling his own fashion label “Pour Toi” in Italy, using found objects to create new art, working with mosaics, and mimicking the natural world through the experimental use of painted forms.

Sam’s artwork covers a broad spectrum of mediums, paint, mosaics, embroidery, fashion, sculpture and civic art. The variety of his designs is captivating. His distinctive style can be easily recognised in each and every design medium. Only truly great designers can handle such an array of ideas and he is one.

With a Master’s Degree in stage set design from the Accademia Delle Belle Arti Milano, Sam currently lectures in fashion at TAFE Sydney and travels to Italy each year for three months to attend the Milano Fashion Week. From 1992-1994 Sam worked in Italy as a designer for the world renowned Missoni design house.
Sam also paints and consults for art installation and civic projects. Sam designed and implemented artwork along a 10km section of motorway in Portugal. His talent across so many artistic styles is unparalleled.

He is also a Master Mosaic artist.  Sam’s talents have been admired and recognised by some of the world’s most illustrious designers, notably Georgio Amani who commissioned a bathroom for his private residence and mosaic designs and several of the Missoni family residences in France and Italy

This collection memetico moves between two intentions. The first is the mimetico - camouflage and the joyous blending of colours and textures. The second is the memetico, in which something repeats - is read and re-read, becoming transfigured through multiplicity into what Sam sometimes calls ‘Unintentional Art’.

These blended styles of acrylic, oil and varnish tree portraits have been developed from an extensive collection of digital photographs taken over many years while wandering through antipodean landscapes. You’ll find the same tree sometimes reworked. In one piece it’s wet following rain, in another black from fire, the same lines detectable, the same wound glossy with gum.

The exhibition consists of 25 paintings and 15 collages.

Sam became an Australian citizen last year, marking a new stage of his life, in what he calls “The Land of Camouflage." This country is full of people like me, strange birds settling in, sort of…blending with the foliage. We welcome Sam and the richness he brings to our shores, you are invited to attend memetico, open now until 10 May 2014.
